The History of Hands and how we Raised Funds to Neuter |Cats
Hands was founded in 2016 by Jenny Connor who, when on holiday in Fethiye, was struck by the large number of stray cats being fed by kind local residents. She quickly discovered that these residents could not afford to have the cats neutered.
She saw that street cats faced constant struggles searching for food, enduring frequent pregnancies, and trying to care for their kittens. With the population rapidly growing, many cats and kittens are suffering and dying as a result.
Jenny had a brilliant idea. She reached out on social media, asking people to look through their old jewellery and donate any odd gold earrings they no longer used. To her surprise, many responded. She took the donated pieces to a gold dealer and transferred the proceeds directly to a local Fethiye vet. The vet, in turn, agreed to neuter street cats at a significantly reduced rate, making the initiative both sustainable and impactful.
Since 2020 Jenny has lived in Türkiye and Hands is a now a fully registered Association that raises funds via events, competitions and local businesses plus the generous donations made by people in Turkiye and the UK. See our Donations page for more details.
